MIES CROWN HALL AMERICAS PRIZE ANNOUNCES OUTSTANDING PROJECTS FOR FIFTH CYCLE

Jury recognizes 42 works for Americas Prize and 11 works by emerging practices

CHICAGO, IL (June 27, 2024) – From 259 nominated works built in 2022 and 2023 throughout North, Central, and South America, the jury for the Cycle 5 of the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (MCHAP) at the College of Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) has named a shortlist of 53 Outstanding projects.

Of these works, 42 will be considered for the Americas Prize, to be granted May 5, 2025; and 11 projects will be considered for the Prize for Emerging Practice, or MCHAP.emerge, to be awarded as part of the inaugural MCHAP.emerge Conference on Critical Practice at S. R. Crown Hall in Chicago on September 27, 2024. The full list of Outstanding works is listed below and available at www.mchap.co/outstanding-projects.

Maurice Cox, MCHAP Cycle 5 Jury Chair and past planning and development commissioner of the City of Chicago, noted among the works a common thread of projects serving the public interest. “The increase in publicly commissioned works clearly signals a renewed commitment to civic architecture and the power of design as demonstrated by a wide range of types, including community centers and cultural, arts, and educational institutions,” Cox said. “Many projects were the result of public-sector and foundation-sponsored design interventions that promote community well-being through design excellence.” Cox also highlighted the important presence of adaptive reuse, urban housing, and sensitive landscape interventions in works drawing the jury’s attention.

“In particular, the projects recognized as Outstanding for the Prize for Emerging Practice illustrate both a strong community-driven orientation and an innovative architectural insertion into the everyday urban fabric of cities. They situate architecture in the public realm where architecture and landscape intersect with people,” he added.

“For this stage in the prize cycle, we charged the jury with selecting from the full body of amazing nominations those projects that stand-out as examples which most clearly address the demands of our time,” said MCHAP Director Dirk Denison.

In addition to Cox, the jury includes Giovanna Borasi, Director, Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal; Gregg Pasquarelli, Founding Principal, SHoP Architects, New York; Mauricio Rocha, Founder, Taller | Mauricio Rocha, Mexico City, and author of the 2023 Americas Prize winner, the addition to the Museo Anahuacalli; and Sofia von Ellrichshausen, Founding Partner, Pezo von Ellrichshausen, Concepción, Chile, and author of Poli House, the 2014 winner of the Prize for Emerging Practice. The jury’s first meeting coincided with an exhibition of all nominated works held in Crown Hall; nominees are also available to view on the MCHAP website, www.mchap.co/. Nominated works completed by Cycle 5 jury members will not be considered for this cycle and will be entered into consideration for Cycle 6.

In August, MCHAP will announce finalists for MCHAP.emerge, which honors a built work by a practice in its first ten years of operation. Authors of these finalist projects will be invited to participate in the MCHAP.emerge Conference on Critical Practice. The registration for the conference will open in Mid-August and will be free to the public. The conference will discuss and reflect on changes in the world and how architects work today and the implications of these shifts for the academy. Co-organized with IIT Associate Teaching Professor Leslie Johnson, the summit will open dialogue between IIT faculty and students, this cycle’s jury and finalists, Prize laureates, and distinguished invited participants from the international MCHAP network.

Finalists for the Americas Prize will be made public at the conclusion with the jury finalist site visits, scheduled for February 2025. A centerpiece of the MCHAP process, the trip allows the jury to witness and evaluate the impact of MCHAP projects firsthand, including through conversations with architects and their teams, clients and inhabitants, and members of the communities surrounding finalist works.

The jury, project teams, and clients will reconvene with IIT students and faculty and the public for the awarding of The Americas Prize at S. R. Crown Hall in Chicago on Monday, May 5, 2025.
