OBJECTIVE

Nomad Dome is FUNCTIONAL by being adaptable to different situations and site requirements. The tensegrity principle minimized weight by implementing tensile cables as spanning elements, subsequently allowing a more EFFICIENT span/weight ratio. It works as a NOMADIC structure, where the first location was within an urban Park where it was utilized during two months with cultural events. The dome is a seven-meter high tensile structure of 575 m2 consisting of steel cable and aluminum tubes of 46 meters long, 16 meters wide, and an impressive weight of 1.342 kg. The structure lands with minimal impact on the land; no land movement or permanent elements required. Though it seems fragile, light and translucent, it is a stable and resilient body. The minimum weight and size of elements allow it to be assembled and disassembled for transportation by a minimum of two unskilled adults. The center of the area is liberated and all supports are located peripherally creating a single open space containing two exceptional openings as access points. Its geometry is the result of a set of rules that provide rigidity and consistency to compressed elements -tubes- and tensed elements -cables-. The pursuit of the material is guided by its ability to be dismountable and by protecting it to possible deteriorations in the movement and great precision and structural strength allowing short assembly times in site.

CONTEXT

The opportunity granted by Y.A.P. is an instance where time, labor and resources are spent, and we are mindful of the lifespan of this great effort invested in temporary pavilions. We believe architecture should address these contingency matters turn them an attribute of the project. In response to this, the dismountable and durable condition of the project out spreads the importance of this initiative because it will conquer new and remote locations to provide a space for the meeting and encounter.

PERFORMANCE

The investigation during the two month testing period made evident the importance and incidence of human interaction as a central aspect of the project itself. The pavilion showed people's inquisitive and playful nature through their interaction with the lighting and conditioning systems that provided a dynamic atmospheric behavior and added comfort during the dry summer heat. The structure succeeded as a versatile frame able to host different mechanisms to adapt to different occasions through (1) the mesh skin, (2) scattered fallen logs, (3) mist system, and (4) the lightning installation by an independent artist. Consequently, the first installation of the pavilion provided invaluable information on how to mantle, dismantle and improve the pavilions functionality and efficiency. As we write this, the structure is kept in a 3.2 x 1.5 x 1m box waiting for a new destination to conquer. As you read this, the pavilion might be on its way.
